Weatherproof Protection for your PDA

By Palm Boulevard Staff

"...incredible level of protection."

The Electronic Armor Palm Case by CellSafe, Inc. is a watertight, crush proof case that is ideal for protecting your PDA in outdoor situations.

What is it

The Electronic Armor Palm Case is a bright yellow-bottomed case with a clear top. The bottom of the case is made from fiberglass reinforced ABS, and the top is made from a clear polycarbonate. The outside dimensions of the case are 6.5" x 3.875" x 1.625", and it weighs 8 oz.

According to the CellSafe Website you can be assured that your Palm will be well protected if you invest in an Electronic Armor Case. It is watertight up to 100 feet, crushproof, shockproof, and it will float with contents weighing up to 12 oz.

The case utilizes several foam pads to secure your P/PCinside the case. The foam pads are not attatched when the case is shipped. Detailed instructions guide you through the process of fitting the foam pads so that your particular PDA will fit snugly within the case.

Opinions

Pros: The obvious pro to this case is the incredible level of protection. I tested the watertight seal of the case(with my Palm removed of course)by putting it in the shower as well as plunging it into a bucket of water. The interior of the case remained dry in both instances. The Electric Armor gets an A for protection from moisture.

Afer verifying that the case is indeed watertight I decided to see if it would float with my Palm IIIc in it. After all, what good would it be to have a palm sitting at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. I put my PDA in and very cautiously placed it on the surface of the water. It floated! Well that was probably an unfair test. I mean how often are you going to be gingerly placing your case into water. I decided to give it a real test. This time I dropped the case, still containing my IIIc, into the water. This would be more representative of a real world situation where the case would fall over the side of a boat. It hit the water with a splash, and initially went below the surface. Much to my relief it rose to the surface after a few seconds. The Electronic Armor Case gets another A.

I tested the shockproof quality of the case by dropping it(from a relatively low height) onto a wooden floor. The case, as well as my Palm, were unharmed. Although the case feels very solid I'm wary of doing any further testing. The Electronic Armor case handled the abuse I've given it very well.

The bright yellow underside of the case is ideal for use in outdoor situations. The color would enable you to easily locate your Palm if you dropped it, or otherwise misplaced it. And the clear top enables you to see the screen, if for instance, you have an alarm going off.

Cons: In the world of PDA devices size is often a major consideration. The Electronic Armor Palm Case definitely looses points in that category. I'm pretty confident that you would have trouble geting that case to fit in your pants pocket. If you're camping, boating, hiking, or engaging in some other outdoor activity the size won't be too much of a factor. The case would fit reasonably well in an outdoor pack.

The case also made it difficult, if not impossible to hear the alarms that I had set on my Palm. Although the clear top made it possible for me to view the alarms, I think that it would be pretty useless if you're storing the Palm in a bag.

Final thoughts

If you work in an outdoor environment, or if you just enjoy being in the outdoors you may benefit from owning, and using the Electronic Armor Palm Case. The case costs only $24.95, and it will more than pay for itself if it prevents you from damaging, or loosing your PDA just once. If on the other hand, your biggest adventure is battling rush hour traffic you may not need the protection that this case offers. For more information, or to order visit the CellSafe Website.
