Sharp Corporation's newly launched Zaurus SL-5600 linux-based PDA includes Insignia Solutions Java-enabling technology. Insignia said its software enables Zaurus users to download and run Java-based content on the Zaurus SL-5600. Use of the Insignia Jeode software is desgned to makes it simple to migrate and run enterprise applications on the device, as well as Java content created by the estimated 250,000 mobile Java developers worldwide. The Zaurus SL-5600 features Sharp's high-resolution color-reflective QVGA LCD screen technology, an integrated QWERTY keyboard with a sliding cover, a rechargeable and replaceable 1700 mAh battery, 64MB of protected flash memory plus 32MB of SDRAM, an d dual expansion with Compact Flash and SD/MMC card slots. In addition, it features an Intel XScale 400MHz processor and an integrated speaker and microphone.
Insignia said Jeode is an implementation of Insignia's Java virtual machine environment, tailored for the limited memory resources and browsing requirements of PDAs and related smart handheld devices. It is compatible with the PersonalJava specification, and supports all PersonalJava 1.2 class libraries, including optional classes.
