SAIC Gives Users Access To Hands-Free Technical Manuals

December 3, 2002

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) said it is showcasing PDA technology that offers talking, palm-sized versions of the military's most advanced technical manuals, complete with images, animation and video at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., from December 2 to 5.

"This tiny device can be clipped to a technician's belt and provide all the information and instructions needed to repair or install a specific piece of equipment," said Beverly J. Kitaoka, SAIC senior vice president and manager of SAIC's Applied Software Systems Engineering Technology Group in Orlando. "Then when it's time to order a part or check inventory for other needs, the PDA can accommodate that as well."

SAIC said its scientists and engineers also have developed technology that allows advanced military simulation exercises to be taken into the field and accessed through a PDA. The company said the PDA can display detailed maps and topographical information so soldiers can perform detailed and realistic mission rehearsals in the field.

When it comes to maintenance or installation of equipment, the company claims the PDA talking technical manuals provide speedy on-site repair, maintenance, and upgrades using not only text but images, animation and video to further illustrate procedures. The technology also enables wireless interface with inventory supplies so parts can be located and ordered instantly from any location.
