Kyocera Corporation has selected Pumatech's Intellisync Lite software to provide core synchronization capabilities for its next-generation handheld device called PocketCosmo.

Pocket Cosmo is unique in that it is based on a Java virtual machine developed by the U.K.'s Tao Group. The device features a 206 MHz StrongArm CPU, 32 MB of RAM, a CompactFlash Type II slot, and a 16-bit color reflective TFT display measuring 3.5 inches and 240x320-pixels.

Under the agreement, Pumatech's Intellisync Lite will be bundled with the new Kyocera PocketCosmo to provide synchronization of e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and expense data between the new Java-based handheld and Microsoft Outlook or the Palm Desktop PC-based software application. In addition, the companies said Intellisync Lite for Kyocera PocketCosmo will provide advanced synchronization capabilities such as intelligent field mapping, custom filtering, and full conflict resolution.

Kyocera said it will also develop PocketCosmo-compliant versions of Intellisync that will support additional PC applications such as Lotus Notes and Organizer, ACT!, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise, and will be sold by Pumatech.

Available to consumers in late July 2002, the PocketCosmo's features includes an Internet browser with security functions such as 128bit SSL, a Japanese input function, the ability to view attachment files, and support for multiple e-mail accounts.
