PDA Briefs: Pong, Signature Wallet, Palm Pays Back , Axim Update, Tungsten E Case, WorldMate, IntelliGolf & More


The latest version (2.0.2) of the classic game Pong ($6.95) is now available for the Pocket PC from Implicit Software. According to the company, the game is set on all new colorful backdrops with improved performance and support for Intel XScale processors, which are found in nearly all Pocket PC released over the past year. The game also now has variable game point options, more intelligent computer opponents, and better graphics and sounds.


CIC's Signature Wallet 2.0 ($25) now supports Palm OS 5.0 devices. Signature Wallet secures your data and Palm OS device with signature verification. Sign your name and Signature Wallet will verify your signature to allow access. All data and templates are encrypted for secure storage using Triple DES algorithm (128-bit).


Palm has launched the Palm Pays Back Program to encourage users to spread the word about its handhelds. You earn credit at online retailers such as Amazon.com, United and Fandango when your friends make a qualifying purchase anywhere handhelds are sold. To earn Palm Bucks, all you need to do is refer friends and family to the program. When your friends purchase either a Palm Zire 71, Tungsten C, Tungsten W, Tungsten E, Tungsten T3, Tungsten T2 or Zire 21, they can validate their handheld at Palm website to get you points.


Dell has posted a ROM update for the Axim X5 Advance. The update resolves a Pocket Internet Explorer problem that produces an error when connecting to certain web sites; improves infrared sensor performance when transferring data between an Axim X5 and a Palm OS handheld; improves notification of backup battery charge; improves time-out of the power button light to extend battery life; reduce start-up time; improves the navigation button applet; improves the CompactFlash modem interface driver; adds support for C stepping of the Intel XScale processor; and adds support for the features from the Microsoft Adaptation Kit Update 5.


Proporta is offering a leather case for the new Palm Tungsten E. The company said the case is crafted in soft leather and is custom made to fit the PDA. There is space for credit, business and memory cards and a secure attachment system to hold the handheld in place. There are two designs for the case, book type and flip type. Both types cost $32.


The IntelliGolf 7.0 golf scoring software for Palm OS handhelds and Pocket PCs is adding support for GPS, Bluetooth, and WAAS/SBAS, as well as more golf statistics, and sidegame enhancements. IntelliGolf users will soon be able to accurately view distances from tee-to-green using IntelliGolf's embedded IntelliGPS technology. IntelliGolf will also support NMEA compliant Bluetooth (i.e. wireless) and serial connected GPS receivers with enhanced WAAS/SBAS accuracy. According to Karrier Communications, the createer of the application it will now include what it calls all 7 S's of golf: Scoring, Shot tracking, 30+ Sidegames, 250+ Statistics, 18,000+ Signature courses, Sharing of information, and now Satellite GPS. It is due to be released in December and will cost $9.95 to $19.95 for each course download.
MobiMate's WorldMate 2003 Professional ($50) travel suite for mobile device now features worldwide flight schedules provided by OAG, including all published direct and connecting flights from over 800 airlines. It also has a service called Dynamic Connections, which identifies the 50 fastest connections to your destination. Other feature include global weather forecasts for over 38,000 locations worldwide from The Weather Channel, an itinerary manager and tip and tax calculators. WorldMate 2003 Professional is now available for Palm OS devices with other platforms coming on board in the fourth quarter.


SYWARE's Visual CE database and forms development software is slated to add support for SMS messaging. This means mobile users can use Pocket PC or Pocket PC Phone Edition devices to send SMS messages directly from within a database application. For example, doctors and nurses can let their hospitals know they are on the way with the push of a button; truck drivers can tell clients if deliveries are running early or late. The new SMS messaging capabilities will be available in Visual CE 8.0, scheduled to ship November 2003.
GetHighTech.com has introduced a do-it-yourself screen repair kit ($100) for the Palm Tungsten C & Tungsten W handhelds. According to the comapny, if you cracked your screen and can turn a screw driver you can fix it yourself. The screens are original Palm Tungsten Screens and not an after market product.
The Nokia 9200 Series Communicator has the ability to handle both industry-standard True Type fonts and the Symbian OS specific gdr bitmap fonts. Installing fonts is not easy, as font files have to be moved to the appropriate folder manually. With Fonts ($10) from the mBrainSoftware, fonts are installed in the Control panel on the Extras screen. With Fonts running, installing a font file requires just pressing OK. Fonts copies the font file to it's proper place, installs it and removes the original file (if one wishes).
