Beatnik Powers Sony Ericsson P800 Audio

By James Miller
February 12, 2003

Sony Ericsson is using Beatnik’s Audio Engine (BAE) in its new Symbian OS P800 mobile phone. The comapnies said the BAE enables users of the P800 to download high-fidelity musical ringtones, play games with realistic sound effects, send audio-enhanced multimedia messages and to assign custom sounds to common phone tasks.

Beatnik plans to demonstrate the audio capabilities of the P800 at its booth on the Texas Instruments stand at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes from February 17-22. An exclusive ringtone will be available for download from Beatnik show staff to a wide range of Beatnik-powered phones being demonstrated at the show.

Beatnik BAE incorporates a synthesizer, mixer, sample rate converter, linear audio player and support for MIDI, SPMIDI, XMF, RMF, and WAV file formats. Just yesterday, Beatnik and Metrowerks made available a Software Development Kit that enables developers to integrate Beatnik polyphonic audio into their Symbian applications.

The P800 is a Symbian OS flip phone that has a 4,096 color and 208 x 320 pixel touchscreen display and weighs 5.6 ounces. It includes 12MB of RAM, a built-in camera and GSM/GPRS support.
