Danger Hiptops To Feature Intel Inside

Danger, maker of the popular Sidekick wireless device, said Thursday that it will use Intel's tri-band GSM/GPRS embedded module for future hiptop devices.

The company said the new devices, which will operate in the three major GSM/GPRS frequencies (900, 1800 and 1900 MHz), will be available later this summer.

"Being able to launch our product to the GSM/GPRS operators worldwide is the natural evolution after our success in the U.S. market," said Hank Nothhaft, Danger's chairman and chief executive officer. "Intel's Tri-band GEM gives us global capability, as well as the best product performance and engineering integration support we've seen in the market today. As a result, we are able to reduce our time to market by reducing the time it takes to get through regulatory and carrier approvals."

Intel announced production plans for its new cell phone processor earlier this year. Based on its low-power XScale architecture, the PXA800F cellular processor uses "wireless-Internet-on-a-chip" technology.
