Gateway has released some more details regarding its entry into the handheld market with a new Pocket PC slated to be launch sometime during mid-to-late July.

Gateway's first PDA offering uses Microsoft's Pocket PC 2003 software, which should be officially announced next week. It has Intel 400MHz XScale processor, 3.5-inch display, dual CompactFlash and Secure Digital slots, and will be priced between $300 and $350. Other details, such as the type of battery and whether the battery is removable, screen resolution and the amount of the memory in the device haven't been made available yet.

The company said the Pocket PC is geared primarily for business professionals, and will be included in bundled mobility solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses, corporations, schools and government agencies.

"Gateway's new PDAs will be ideal for on-the-go professionals and tech-savvy consumers," said Mike Stinson, Gateway's vice president of mobile products. "With Gateway's many channels - from the Web to our nationwide network of Gateway stores - we'll be able to reach customers in unique ways and bundle handhelds with other Gateway products to create mobility solutions."

The introduction of the new PDA is part of Gateway's plan to unviel more than 50 new products across 15 consumer electronics and business categories, transforming itself into an not just a computer company but an electronics brand. The company said it plans to fill out its PDA line in future months with a value-priced offering as well as other handheld products.
