Handspring recently announced Treo 600 smartphone was named "Best of Show" in the mobile and wireless services category at the CeBit America trade fair in New York this week. Recognized for its fully integrated QWERTY keyboard and bar phone design, the Treo 600 was selected for its sleek form factor and features that include a Palm OS 5-based organizer, messaging, email, and web-browsing capabilities. The Treo 600, expected to be released this fall, is slated to come in dual-band CDMA radio and a quad-band GSM/GPRS editions.
Sony will start including Decuma's handwriting recognition software in the latest CLIEs, the NX73V and NX80V, which are slated to be released in the U.S. this month. Its OnSpot Technology allows CLIE owners to directly use the same input area for writing, presents recognized letters, and allows for the editing and formatting of text. Users can also define their own symbols, or short cuts, and add personal characters.
A character can be written with one or more strokes, which means that the user does not have to adjust to a certain style or learn a special alphabet. Upper-case characters, lower-case characters, digits, punctuation marks and special symbols, as well as accented characters, can be mixed in the same input mode.
Speaking of the new CLIE NX80V and NX73V, Xigma Style Japan has released a leather case ($48) for the handhelds. The cases are made of Napa cowhide in the exterior and soft lamb suede in the interior, and are available in black/red, black/beige, black/black and black/blue (exterior / interior). Card pockets inside the flip cover can store two memory sticks and one credit card .
Penticon Technologies' PhoneMagic ($19.95) is an Address Book replacement for the Palm OS. The company says it has the familiar look and feel of the built-in Address Book, but adds other features, including Reminders, Pop-Ups, Virtual Links, Recent Numbers, Smart Lookup, and more
Astraware is bringing its Insaniquarium ($14.95) game to high-resolution Palm OS and Pocket devices. The new versions take advantage of the 320x480 HiRes+ Sony CLIE devices and the 240x320 screen size of the Pocket PC by using a landscape format. Insaniquarium is a conversion of the original Web-based game developed by PopCap which enables players to become aquarium owners and buy and raise a selection of fish. Players must ensure that their fish are well fed while fighting off aliens with the help of an assortment of underwater creatures.
