Handango Rings Up BlackBerry Ringtones

By James Alan Miller
December 9, 2005

The multi-billion dollar burgeoning ringtone market isn't just for kids and young adults anymore. How else to explain Handango's launch this week of Ringphonic, an online store where RIM BlackBerry users—mostly of the government, business and financial ilk—can go to personalize the sounds coming out of their highly functional enterprises devices.

With Ringphonic, subscribers gain access to a library of more than 400 premium ringtones, which can then be downloaded over-the-air. Ringtones include Coldplay's "Clocks," the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love," Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," ABC Sports' "Monday Night Football" and more, in categories that include Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, Top 40, TV/Movie Themes, Country, 60's, 70's, 80's, Jazz, Blues, Classical among others.

"Over the past year, Handango has seen substantial growth of the BlackBerry software market during which our customers have consistently asked for a simple way to find and download premium ringtones for their BlackBerry phones," said Handango CEO & president Randy Eisenman in a prepared statement.

The online mobile application retailer is also making Ringphonic available to operators as a white-labeled solution. That way a carrier can use Ringphonic to differentiate their BlackBerry device portfolios under their own banner or a third-party brand.

Handango would continue to maintain the ringtone solution—content creation, licensing, royalties, digital rights, security, provisioning and subscription management—leaving operators to focus on marketing and service.

Ringphonic uses the ringtone catalog from Versaly Entertainment, a mobile brand management company. It currently supports the BlackBerry 7100 series. Handango expects to bring the new 8700 series on board in the coming weeks.

A Ringphonic subscription costs $9.99 per month for access to eight ringtones. A Lite version offers four ringtones a month for $6.99. Ringtones are also available on a pay-per-download basis for $1.99 each.
