Smart Phones Smart Feedback

By James Alan Miller
March 1, 2005

Sensory feedback vendor Immersion Corporation anticipates that recent acceptance into Symbian’s Platinum Partner Program will help it establish a foothold with the leading smartphone platform. To date more than 20 million Symbian handsets have been sold worldwide.

Immersion’s VibeTonz System extends tactile feedback way beyond the capabilities of your typical vibrating cell phone. With it an application developer can independently control both vibration strength and frequency for what the company calls high-fidelity touch sensations.

To enable this level of control you must replace the usual "on/off" pager motor in a handset with Immersion's hardware and control software. As one would expect, the company asserts its touch technology completes the sensory experience for mobile phones.

For example, the addition of VibeTonz to Symbian applications could mean the creation of ringtones that incorporate a VibeTonz-effect track synchronized to the music. That way the phone can communicate who's calling even when audio is turned off or noise levels are to loud.

With VibeTonz a developer may also choose to add:

  • More realism to effects like explosions and collisions in a game
  • Sensations for ringing, busy, and connect to let users know a call’s status silently
  • A tactile pulse to mark entrees in a contacts database for sight-free searching
  • Unique sensations for messages from different individuals
  • Tactile rhythms, beats, and effects to music, video, and other applications

The company's VP & general manager John Grundy said, "It's (VibeTonz) a logical evolution because it makes the user experience more personal, realistic, and enjoyable. VibeTonz touch sensations can also fuel new content, as well as services, and enhance the value of current mobile offerings."

Symbian VP of marketing Simon Garth agrees.

He declared, “Phones based on Symbian OS have strong integration between the core functions of contacts database, data messaging, and voice calls, and Immersion's VibeTonz System takes advantage of this integration to offer a new dimension to the user interface and user experience."
