Update Enhances Dell Axim X50 Series

Dell has released a pair ROM updates for its Axim X50 series of Pocket PCs. One of these covers the VGA (640 x 480 pixel) resolution screen Axim X50v (see top image), while the other addresses the two QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) models (see bottom image).

Both patches, called ROM A05, speak to basically the same issues. These include:

  •  Support LEAP-WAP wireless encryption.
  •  Increase the data transfer rate of SDIO to 19.5MHz on PXA27X C5.
  •  Add a new network certification -- GoDaddy SSL certificate root into the ROM image.
  •  Phase in new updated Bluetooth stack BTW-CE 1.5.0.2601.
  •  Enhance Wireless encryption WPA-PSK network under Cisco AP with new IOS version 12.3(2) JA
  •  Bug fix for Home applet screen on the X50.

The Axim A50's download includes a bug fix for its WMV Marathon display codec, while the Axim A50v's has one for that model's WMV G2700 display codec.

You can find the Axim X50 series updates on Dell's Web site under the System and Configuration Utilities option.

In May, Dell promised customers it would release an upgrade to Microsoft’s latest handheld operating system, Windows Mobile 5.0, for the Axim X50 series. Due from Dell during the third quarter, the update will include many productively (e.g. Mobile Office upgrade) and multimedia (e.g. Direct3D support) improvements. It also moves all applications and data to ROM for safer data storage. (For more on Windows Mobile 5.0, click here.)

The Dell Axim X50 platform upgrades aren't due until the third quarter. They'll be available on CD—Dell had problems with its downloadable updates the last time around—for an as-of-yet undisclosed price.

    More on Axim X50 Series
Last October, Dell became the second Pocket PC vendor, after Hewlett-Packard (HP), to introduce a VGA handheld in the United States with the Axim X50v; as part of the Axim X50series.

All Axim X50 models integrate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless networking, as well as Secure Digital (SD) and CompactFlash Type II expansion slots. They measure the same 4.65 x 2.85 x .65 inches with similar basic form factors.

The Pocket PCs' regular battery is a 1100 mAH type, but there is an additional, more powerful, 2200 mAH battery available as an option.

The VGA Axim X50v's screen measures a largish 3.7 inches. A 624 MHz Intel PXA270 XScale processor powers the handheld, while an Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator delivers DVD quality video playback. There is 62MB of RAM available to the users with 91MB of ROM you can use like an SD memory card.

Two other models in the X50 series QVGA screen measure 3.5 inches. One of these Pocket PCs has a 520 MHz XScale processor with 63MB of RAM and 94MB of ROM storage available to the user. The other has a 416 MHz XScale processor, 63MB of RAM available to the user, and 30MB of ROM storage.
