Thinness became a defining factor in cell phone coolness when Motorola released the first RAZR a couple of years ago. With the number two mobile phone vendor's introduction of the Q in May, the quest for narrowness made the jump up to the smartphone world.

Nokia, not known for its ultra-slim handsets, has made a couple of attempts of late to take advantage of this fad.

For example, there's the upcoming N75 and the currently available E62 and E61 communicators, which fall into Q/Dash/BlackJack/Treo/BlackBerry territory with their relative compactness and QWERTY thumb-keyboard. The E62, released in October by Cingular Wireless, is a scaled-back version of the E61, which has been available in Europe since the summer.

A complaint by some regarding the E61/62, however, is they're not quite as thin as some of their competitors. This may change shortly. According to new pictures circulating through the Internet rumor mill, both devices will soon be succeeded by a much slimmer (and therefore even more competitive) smartphone, the E62i.

In addition to shaving off a few millimeters from its width, the E62/E61 update is supposed to offer at least one other significant enhancement, a camera. The unique joystick of the current models is gone as well, replaced by a navigator that appears to be much flatter.

While the E62i is almost certainly a Symbian OS, S60 interface smartphone with Bluetooth and a number of other features similar to the E62/E61, no other specifics are known at this time. We'll inform you of more details about the E62i's specifications as they come to light.
