iPAQ hx4700 Windows Mobile 5.0 Upgrade Arrives

Although the iPAQ hx4700 series recently went missing from Hewlett-Packard's( HP) commerce site, leading to speculation that the company discontinued the handheld, the long wait for an upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 is apparently finally over for owners of the high-end Pocket PC.

The computer and printer giant's North American Web site says users can buy Microsoft's latest handheld operating system for their device on CD already, while a download version is coming soon—not very specific we know. Meanwhile, the system update is already available to English speakers for $39.99 - as a download - from HP's European Web sites.

HP first started offering Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrades for several other iPAQs - the hx2110, hx2410, and hx2750 - back in September 2005. But it delayed the system update for the hx4700 because of conflicts with its VGA screen, presumably.

In addition to native support for 640 x 480 resolution (VGA) displays, Windows Mobile 5.0 includes:

  • ActiveSync 4.1, the most current synchronization software for faster management and transfer of information on your PC server
  • Improved Productivity
    • Faster access to e-mail and information
    • New Office Mobile Suite
      • Word Mobile for improved document format support
      • Excel Mobile for better support when viewing and creating charts
      • PowerPoint Mobile for viewing and giving presentation on the go
    • Secure Device Management
  • Integrated Multimedia (Windows Media Player 10)
    • More support for media via services and the desktop
    • More options to use media to personalize devices
  • Persistent Store: helps to protect against the loss of personal data and applications when batteries discharge completely
  • Pocket MSN, which permits one click access to MSN Hotmail and MSN Messenger
