The iPod Turns Six Today

It was six years ago today that Apple first introduced the gadget that would set the music world on its ear, the iPod. Since October 2001, Apple has shipped more than 110 million iPods and is still going strong, moving 10.2 million units last quarter, an increase of 17 percent from the same period last year.

So what are some of the difference between today’s and yesterday’s iPod:

IPod number one (see top image) could hold 1,000 songs on its 5GB hard drive. It delivered 10 hours of music from a single charge of its battery. Today, Apple offers four iPod models: the Shuffle, Nano, Classic and Touch, the last of which adds a touch screen and Web access to the iPod's mix of features.

The Classic, today’s closest relative to the first iPod, is smaller than the original, but sports either a 80GB or 160GB hard drive; the latter of which holds about 40,000 songs. The Classic’s screen is larger and is color (black and white displays disappeared a few years ago) and it can play videos and display photos. Apple also promises 30 hours of audio from the Classic’s battery, three times that of iPod number one.

These are just a few of the changes that have occurred over the last six years. For fun, click here (for Apple's introduction of the first iPod) and here (for last month’s announcement of the iPod Classic). Compare the two to see just how far the iPod has advanced.
