A version of Earthcomber, long available for the Palm OS, Windows Mobile and Web-enabled cell phones (which now include the iPhone), has just been released for the Blackberry.

The company behind Earthcomber, also called Earthcomber, describes its eponymous navigation application as "personal radar" for your phone or smartphone. Because Earthcomber is constantly on the look out (combing) for things nearby that you find useful and interesting, telling you exactly when a personal interest or location is present or nearby. Personal interests can include just about anything: free Wi-Fi, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants, gas stations, stores, ATMs, live music, movies, etc.

Earthcomber works whether your BlackBerry has GPS (integrated or via a Bluetooth connection to a GPS peripheral) or not. With GPS, Earthcomber tells you where points of interests are automatically. Without it, the information is still there, but you have to tell Earthcomber exactly where you are on the map by entering an address or nearby locations.

Earthcomber is available only in the U.S. Since it uses a mobile operator’s cellular network, Earthcomber does require a data plan order to work.

The Earthcomber download is available through your PC or over the air. There is also a mobile Web site that you can use, mobile.earthcomber.com, if you do not want to install the program on your BlackBerry.
