Review: Mobylo's Empower HTML Mail Viewer for BlackBerry

By Melissa Oxendale
October 8, 2007

If you're tired of text only e-mails, then Mobylo's Empower HTML Mail Viewer for BlackBerry is for you.

The software is simple to install: Download it over the air from m.mobylo.com directly to your BlackBerry and have it up and running right away, for example. There is no set up needed as the program will run once installed.

You can access Empower's options from the menu in the e-mail application on your BlackBerry. Once there, on the main options page, you can set if you want Empower to turn all e-mails into HTML or not. You can also change the font family and size as well as the background and header pattern.

                            Mail Options                                                           Advanced Options

In the options you can change how pictures are handled in your e-mails as well as links. Smileys can be turned on or off, along with auto more and the full header.

There is also an option to append a signature, which adds a little note to all your e-mails about Empower. This feature is turned on automatically and you won't notice it unless you e-mail yourself or someone points it out to you. This play to have every one of your messages market Empower is probably the biggest down side of the application.

With Empower installed, the regular normal shortcuts inside e-mail message still work, such as t to go to the top, b to go to the bottom, and space to advance a screen.

                            Headlines On                                                           Headlines Off

While regular BlackBerry e-mails are instantly available to read, with Empower it takes a moment or two before a message shows up. Images take longer as well—sometimes there is just a box place holder while the image is being downloaded.

Empower is a lot handier and performs bette3r for e-mails with links, such as to news stories or sales messages.

Overall, Empower is a step up from the default e-mail, making it a lot easier to handle link heavy e-mails. Although it does not offer the bells and whistles of other applications like BBSmart Email Viewer, but the price is also much lower: $9.99 to $24.99.

                            Weather On                                                           Weather Off

If you are just looking to make the e-mails look better, and that's all, Empower is a great option. Otherwise you should take a look at BBSmart.
