Nokia has posted a firmware upgrade for its N76 smartphone. This handset, Nokia's answer to Motorola's RAZR, is an ultra-slim clamshell like that mega-popular feature phone.

The update, available through your PC with the Nokia Software Updater, provides a number of improvements. These include longer battery life and better overall performance, as well as the addition of Active Search and Nokia Maps.

Nokia Maps is a mapping and routing application from the mobile phone giant that allows you to zoom into destinations of your choice. It offers free maps for more than 150 countries and 15 million points of interest.

Active Search is a plug-in that adds a universal search box to the N76's Today Screen.

The 4.2 x 2.0 x 0.5-inch (106.5 x 52 x13.7- millimeter) N76 weighs in at a mere 4 ounces (115 grams), but it doesn't skimp too much on features.

There's a 2.0 megapixel camera for picture and video, 2.4-inch, 16 million color QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) internal display, 160 x 128 pixel resolution external screen, support for industry-standard 3.5 mm headphones, dedicated music and volume controls, 26 MB of RAM, and a microSD slot for memory expansion.

It runs on the S60 3rd Edition interface on top of the Symbian OS.
