E-TEN Windows Mobile with VGA Display, Keyboard Now Official

After months of speculation, the eagerly-waited Goldfish M800 smartphone is finally official. As yesterday, E-Ten Information Systems introduced the new Windows Mobile yesterday in the U.K.

The M800 is E-Ten's second model, after the Goldfish X800, with a VGA (480 x 640 pixel) display in less than a year. E-Ten started shipping the X800 a couple of weeks ago, just as it announced yet another new Goldfish model, the X600.

Although the M800 is similar to the X800, there's one key difference: the newer model adds a sliding QWERTY thumb-keyboard. This makes the M800, which seems to have just about everything, the first Windows Mobile smartphone with both a VGA screen and a keyboard. The M800's touch screen measures 2.8 inches diagonally by the way.

Additional features in the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA 3G/3.5G smartphone include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 (with support for stereo wireless headsets), a 500MHz Samsung processor, 256MB of ROM, 64MB of RAM, a GPS receiver and two cameras.

The main camera, located on the back, is 2 megapixels and includes built-in auto focus. On the front is a 0.3 megapixel camera to support video telephony over a 3G data network.

While E-Ten did not offer a price or any information about where or when the M800 will ship, importer Mobile Planet (Expansys) has an unlocked version listed twice: as Ordered on Request (for $750) and Pre-Order (price not announced).

You can get an unlocked version of the X800 through retailers like Mobile Planet for $650.

The unveiling of the M800 follows E-Ten's introduction of yet another new Goldfish model, the X600.

As with the M800 and X800, the X600 is a Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone with a touch screen and Wi-Fi. Although E-Ten didn't offer very many details about the X600, we do know it is smaller, at 4.2 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches (107 x 58 x 14.7 millimeters) and lighter, 4.8 ounces (136 grams), than either of the other recent models.

E-Ten said the X600 would ship sometime this month for an unspecified price.
