Early this year, when Microsoft introduced Windows Mobile 6, Palm and AT&T promised a platform upgrade for Treo 750 users would be forthcoming. Ten months or so later that operating system upgrade is finally available.

The free upgrade brings increased functionality, an enhanced user interface and strengthened security and performance to the Treo 750, as well as 3.5G HSDPA cellular-wireless capabilities for faster data-download speeds (up to a max of 1.8Mbps) on UMTS/HSPDA networks like AT&T's.

It'll also provide access to several AT&T Multimedia services: AT&T Music, CV (Video), and AT&T Mall (shopping).

Palm has also released an unlocked version of the Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6 pre-installed. It rolled out a ROM upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 as a free download for folks who already own an unlocked Treo 750 back in October. And European Treo 750 customers got their upgrade way back in August.

Enhancements brought to the Treo 750 with the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade also include HTML/Smart Filtering, SharePoint access, more robust Mobile Office applications, support for voice commands via Bluetooth, USB cable charging, and native support for Microsoft's Direct Push technology for better e-mail, search, calendar, contact and task connectivity with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

It also brings HTML-formatted email messages; the ability to set an out-of-office message from a Treo; as well as miniSD storage card encryption, password and PIN improvements, and remote data wipe.

Keep in mind, once you install this download on your device, you will not be able to revert back to Windows Mobile 5.0.

In addition, Windows Mobile 6 does not support the Blackberry Connect service. So do not install this update if you use this service on your Treo 750. Tom Tom GPS solutions may not function correctly with the platform upgrade as well.

You can download the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Treo 750 from AT&T here, where you'll also find more details on what it'll bring to your smartphone.
