Company Takes Apple to Court Over iPhone's Visual Voicemail System

Klausner Technologies filed a $360 million lawsuit against Apple this week. At issue: The Visual Voicemail solution included with the iPhone.

Visual Voicemail is a feature that allows iPhone users to look at a listing of their voicemails (see image), decide which messages to listen to, and then go directly to those messages without needing to sift through prior messages.

In its suit, Klausner asserts Apple's Visual Voicemail infringes on a pair of its patents. Both of which have already been licensed to other companies, such as Time Warner's AOL subsidiary and Vonage, that provide visual voicemail services themselves.

Klausner filed its lawsuit in the U.S. Court for the Eastern District of Texas, which is known for the extremely high success rate of patent owners whose cases go to a trial by jury.

This isn’t the first time Klausner and Apple have crossed paths in court. Back in the 1990s, Klausner sued Apple over patents connecting the Newton, Apple’s PDA product at the time. Eventually, this suit was settled out of court when Apple agreed to a licensing agreement.
