BlackBerry, Office Phone Systems Merge

By Melissa oxendale
May 8, 2007

At the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Research In Motion (RIM) unveiled the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System, or BlackBerry MVS, which enables a BlackBerry to become a mobile extension of your desk phone.

BlackBerry MVS allows access to PBX functions directly from your BlackBerry menu, so one phone number will ring your BlackBerry or your office phone. It also allows access to functions that normally require access to the desk, such as transfer and extension dialing from your BlackBerry menu.

A downside for the BlackBerry workers, by having the BlackBerry meet the PBX for calls it allows for the calls to be logged or recorded for audit or compliance purposes. Please keep this in mind when talking on your BlackBerry. On a bright note, this can take the home office to a whole new level.

This new system is expected to be available later this month. The new BlackBerry Mobile Voice System includes:

  •  BlackBerry® MVS Client (a component of BlackBerry Device Software)
  •  * BlackBerry® MVS Connectors (a component of BlackBerry Enterprise Server)
  •  * Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite (a software suite that interfaces with heterogeneous PBXs)

Key features of BlackBerry MVS include:

    1. Seamless convergence of BlackBerry smartphones with office desk phones - uses existing corporate phone number, and maintains one "Reach Me Anywhere" phone number for the user.
    2. Office desk phone functionality while mobile - supports extension dialing, transfer, park and consolidated voicemail.
    3. Intuitive menu-driven interface - makes placing and receiving enterprise calls and accessing desk phone functionality amazingly simple.
    4. Secure mobile desk phone - authenticates callers with the telephony system.
    5. IT controls - allows an organization to route all calls through the telephony system for billing / audit purposes.
    6. Works in heterogeneous PBX environments - supports IP, TDM or mixed vendor environments.
