Review: JiveTalk - BeeJive Scores with BlackBerry IM Client

By Melissa Oxendale
June 13, 2007

BeeJive has hit a home run with JiveTalk 1.0. It is an instant messaging (IM) program that lets you use multiple IM clients, including AOL IM, Yahoo, and Google Talk, all in one application on your BlackBerry.

JiveTalk is available for $19.95 as for a single device license, so it is only loadable on one device. For $29.95 you can get a user license that lets you change devices to your hearts content.

An important feature of JiveTalk is the sound settings inside your Profiles. I do not like having to remember to sign out or change the volume in a program. With JiveTalk, when I go to work and change my BlackBerry from normal to silent or vibrate JiveTalk will change with it. There are three options in Profile: Buddy Pounce, New IM While Active, New Im While Idle.

                                  Set Status

The icon, if you have it visible, will change depending on your status so you can tell at a glance if you are available or busy on your IM. Also, it will notify you if you have a new IM waiting for your attention. That is if you miss the pop up box alert or have it turned off.

                          Pop Up Box Alert

You can have more than one account for each IM client. And you can group your contacts by the account they are attached too. For example, if I have a work Yahoo account and a personal Yahoo account I don't have to worry about getting the contacts confused as they will be listed separately under the Yahoo account they are attached to. I can have them all listed out or collapsed.

JiveTalk will automatically reconnect, so you don't have to remember to after a phone call or when you are in an area with spotty coverage.

                            Add An Account

There are a lot of preferences to pick from with JiveTalk. You can turn off the alerts, change how buddies are grouped, show timestamps, show the clock on the title bar, and enable new version alert just to name a few.

And for BlackBerry owners who like a little more detail their is a log you can view. You can send the log out if you are having issues. There is an option to check the bandwidth usage, memory, and host information.

JiveTalk also has cool smiley options available. And if that is not enough, there is an upgrade option right in the application. You don't have to navigate out to the Web site on your own. You click on the upgrade option and the download website is brought up in the BlackBerry browser.

With its comprehensive list of features, I have to say JiveTalk is one of, if not the best, BlackBerry IM application available today.
