Centro has been one of the few bright spots of late for Palm. It is the handheld makers most compact smartphone ever, targeted to appeal to consumers as much as mobile professionals. In hopes of expanding Centro's appeal even further, Palm and Sprint, the operator that sells it in the U.S., are now offering the smartphone in Pink, as previously rumored.

Centro goes for 99 pricing with a two-year contract and after rebates.

So far Centro has only been available from Sprint, a carrier that uses CDMA cellular-wireless technology for its network and EV-DO for 3G data services. Some pictures making the rounds through Internet rumor mill strongly indicate Palm is developing a version of Centro for carriers that use GSM/UTMS technology, which happens to be the majority of operators worldwide.

Furthermore, these images (from a thread on TreoCentral) clearly show the AT&T logo, making the carrier the likeliest candidate to eventually offer the new version of Centro in this country.

Although the pictures clearly show a Centro, it is not clear if will brand it that way. Centro is Palm's first non-Treo smartphone since the Tungsten W of many years ago. It may decide to call the smartphone in the images Treo. You never know.

As with the CDMA/EV-DO Centro carried by Sprint, the AT&T version most likely runs on the Palm OS and not Windows Mobile. Apparently the keyboard of the GSM/UTMS version is slightly more angled than its CDMA brethren.

Not much else is know about AT&T's 'Centro.'

The CDMA edition measures only 4.2 x 2.1 x 0.7 inches and weighs a mere 4.2 ounces.

Additional features include support for Sprint's 3G network and dial-up-networking via Bluetooth, so you can use Centro as a modem to access the Web or corporate network. You can also use Bluetooth to connect to various peripherals, including hands-free kits, wireless headsets, and GPS devices.

The smartphone's 2.2-inch touch screen supports a 320 x 320 pixel resolution and 65,000 colors. That screen is powered by a 1150mAh removable battery Palm promises will supply up to 3.5 hours talk and 3 days standby time.

Centro’s got 64M of internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 4GB additional memory in a single expansion card.

Take picture and video with Centro's 1.3 megapixel 2x digital zoom digital camera.
