Palm recently made a pair of software updates available for two of its smartphones: one for the Treo 680, the other for the Centro. Nokia’s also got an upgrade to the firmware of its N82 smartphone ready as well.

Treo 680
The first update (available here) is a new ROM for the unlocked version of the Treo 680. It installs the latest software on this version of the Treo 680. This includes Microsoft's Direct Push Technology, power saving enhancements, support for larger expansion cards, improved ringtone support, etc.

Keep in mind, this upgrade is not for Treo 680 users who bought their smartphone directly from carrier, such as AT&T in the U.S. That version of the Treo 680 already has a software update available for it. If you haven't installed that software upgrade already, you can access it here.

Palm Cento
Palm's second update delivers a number of enhancements to the company's own VersaMail e-mail application on its Centro smartphone. It is designed to be install directly on the Centro Over the Air (OTA). So do not download it to your computer and HotSync it to your Centro.

Improvements include enhancements to VersaMail's Gmail IMAP compatibility and an updated setup wizard with the new Gmail settings. There are also improvements to help eliminate the silent failure of e-mail when using Microsoft’s Direct Push technology via Exchange ActiveSync in VersaMail.

Nokia N82
Available through Nokia's Software Update application, of which you must download the latest version (go here to do that), the N82 update delivers several bug fixes and stability improvements. Because it supports Nokia' User Data Preservation technology, the upgrade process is supposed to leave all the data in your smartphone's memory as is, EVEN though the firmware is being replaced. Previously, when you performed a firmware upgrade, everything on your smartphone got erased. We suggest you back everything up anyway, just in case.
