More smartphone users than ever can now tune in and watch videos on YouTube while on the move, thanks to the beta launch of a new and greatly expanded mobile version of the site. YouTube access is no longer province of the iPhones and Helio Oceans of the world.

Rather than accessing YouTube through your smartphone's web browser, like you would on the desktop, YouTube for Mobile is a standalone application. With it installed, you'll be able to do pretty much everything you can with the desktop version of YouTube.

For example, in addition to watching videos, you can perform a search (accessing most of YouTube's available videos) and upload your own videos straight to YouTube, all for free. You can even sign-in to your YouTube account to view your subscriptions, playlists and favorite videos.

To go and download YouTube for Mobil head all you have to do is head over to m.youtube.com/app from your phone's web browser and follow the instructions.

Currently, YouTube for Mobile application supports the following J2ME (Java) MIDP2 devices: these include few Nokia S60 models, such as the 6110, 6120, E65, N73, and N95; and some Sony Ericsson smartphones, including the k800 and w880.

The software works over a Wi-Fi or cellular-wireless data connection. However, on the cellular side, YouTube recommends using a 3G data network (you'll be told when your connection is too slow) and you have an unlimited data plan. No surpise there, as streaming video will eat up kilobytes quickly.
