Since the myriad communication features of a smartphone-including SMS, MMS, e-mail and more-all followed the basic application of speaking and hearing via telephone service, it seems natural that voice recognition software for the devices would expand the utility of your mouth over your hands. But tapping tiny keys with fingers or thumbs, hunching over even a full QWERTY keyboard and generally trying to write in pathetic conditions has become the norm.

Maybe not forever. Nuance Communications, a speech recognition company, has penned deals with Nokia and T-Mobile to bring more voice recognition possibilities to smartphones.

In addition to dictating text messages and e-mails, Nokia users may have a whole plethora of options blown open as the deal allows for third-party development, too. T-Mobile's deal brings Nuance Mobile Care, a service for users to get support, via voice recognition, for common handset problems.
