By James Alan Miller
One year ago the Mozilla Foundation announced it would was developing a version of its popular FireFox web browser mobile devices. The first fruits of this effort have finally arrived. Codenamed Fennec, the browser is available to anyone who wants use it on one of Nokia's Linux-run N8x0 Wi-Fi tablets. A Windows Mobile edition of Fennec is in the works, however.
"Work on Windows Mobile has heated up quite a bit. We should be getting some Fennec builds for WinMo soon. We have also seen Fennec showing up on other hardware too," wrote Mozilla Platform Evangelist Mark Finkle on his blog.
Should you install the new browser, keep in mind Fennec is going to be pretty buggy. Of course, Moizlla’s going to want your feedback so they can make it better.
Mozilla's goal with the browser is to provide wireless users with a full-fledged Firefox experience, including support for browser extensions as well as enabling other developers to build applications on top of it.
Don't own a Nokia tablet but want to try Fennec anyway? You can. Mozilla is allowing anyone to try the browser out on a desktop - Windows, Mac, and Linux. On his blog, Finkle writes:
That's right, you can install Fennec on your Windows, OS X or Linux desktop too! We want you to be able to experiment, provide feedback, write add-ons and generally get involved with the Mozilla Mobile project, even if you don't have a device Mozilla had expected to have the mobile browser available for embedded Linux and Windows Mobile devices by the end of the year. Don't expect to see a final release until well into next year, however. Related Links:
