By James Alan Miller
The ROM upgrade does deliver some free multimedia content, including a few ringtones, some wallpapers, a couple of songs, and audio postcards to Shadow users. It doesn’t offer much in the way of improvements, however; beyond promising to enhance myFaves and menu graphics and, more importantly, improve the text entry experience. Because the Shadow sports a BlackBerry Pearl-like 20-key keypad/keyboard for text entry, it relies on predictive text software to help users accurately input words and write messages. Anything that’ll make this features even better is sure to be welcome by all but the most nimble-fingered of users.
You can download and learn more about the update here , at T-Mobile’s support site. When the process is done, you’ll be upgraded to software version 1.11.531.5. After clicking on the Download the update button, you’re prompted to input your 10 digit mobile phone number and then the IMEI before the upgrade starts downloading to your PC.
As with all ROM upgrades, make sure you back everything up on your Shadow beforehand, as all the data on your device will be erased and may not reload correctly should you run into a problem. The Shadow is Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphones, so its 2.6-inch, QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) resolution display isn't a touch screen. It does feature a polished Windows Mobile user-interface to make the smartphone easier to use and a spin wheel for navigation, however. It measures 4.1 x 2.1 x 0.6 inches, weighs 5.3 ounces, and is ,a quad-band world phone with support for 2.5G EDGE cellular-data networking, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's also microSDHC slot for storage expansion and a 2.0 megapixel camera for picture and video. And while the Shadow supports T-Mobile myFaves, it is an enhanced version of the service. So in addition to unlimited nationwide calling to five people of your choice, it allows you to quickly send an e-mail, text or instant message, and share a picture, video or voice note as well.
