FileFind: More Easily Find Files Through Date Searches

By James Alan Miller

The Palm m505 could store 50 images in its RAM. Nowadays, a Treo 680 can store thousands of pictures and videos on a cutting-edge 16GB memory card. What are millions of pictures worth if you can’t find them? That's where applications like FileFind from Tamoggemon Software come in, which has been updated to version 3.0 with a new capability, date searches.

So, now, with FileFind 3.0 you can search files on storage cards/internal file stores using their creation, modification and/or last access dates. You pick the date' FileFind does the work.

In addition to data, you can still look for files in other ways as well. Search for full or partial matches by size, content, name or attributes (e.g. read-only, hidden, system, archive, link, and size). It presents results in a list, with the details of each file (size and path) only a double-tap away.

FileFind 3.0 sells for $9.95, but is available for $7.99 for the next couple of days.

Apps like FileFind are important because search has never been a strong suit of the Palm OS. The fact that ACCESS (formally PalmSource) hasn't updated the platform in years hasn't helped matters.

For example, the main purpose of FileFind is to assist a user's search for information beyond RAM, in expansion memory (e.g. Secure Digital, miniSD, microSD, etc.), which the native Palm platform Find utility cannot do.

The lack of this capability is mindboggling considering memory cards, which can be up to several gigabytes in size, are where many users hold most of their data nowadays. Finding a single file or document can turn into a search for a needle in a haystack.
