Oh, the joy of passing your phone around to show off the photo you just snapped of you and your buddies. Nothing quite like seeing the squinting eyes of your colleagues or friends as they tilt the little machine to get a clearer view. Of course, you can beam or e-mail it around, too, ensuring that everyone has it as fair game for new wallpaper, a photo sharing site, or just to save in the digital equivalent of a photo album.
But what about those actual, tactile albums? Remember the fun of snapping a Polaroid, peeling back the chemicals, seeing your happy face and then gluing it ever-so-carefully into a scrapbook? Or sticking it to your locker with a magnet? Maybe you've been at trade shows where you watch as someone delights in the innovations of your signature product and you've wished you could capture that person's expression and send it home with them, so they remember that joy when they're making purchasing decisions.
It won't be long now. Soon, for under $200, you can tote a tiny, full-color printer with you and run off images from your cell phone, Pocket PC or other device instantly-no chemicals to peel back, no smudging to be wary of.
Zink Imaging, which spun off from Polaroid, promises a totally ink-free (or Zero Ink, hence the name) way to produce color photos. And in a partnership with Polaroid, it plans to bring to market this year the Polaroid Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer, a gadget about the size of your phone that takes 2"x3" slips of Zink's special paper. The technology uses dye crystals embedded in the paper to create color. The paper cut to fit the Mobile Printer has an adhesive back, so you can instantly stick your photos wherever you want. Magnets optional. Related Links:
