Just a heads up for Windows Mobile users: when you fire up a new device fresh out of the box, don't get too excited if you immediately see a "notification" button on the left side. You're probably just being notified that Microsoft would like you to sign up to let it troll your Microsoft applications for information about how you use your device.

If you opt in, click the link, a Microsoft page will launch in Internet Explorer and you can read all the promises about how you won't get spam, you're not—really—being spied on and, by the way, no you can't see what information you're sending.

The Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program is not a survey and participating doesn't seem to get you much. The company explains that millions of users are expected to sign up and if that happens, and the data are in any way conclusive, then your participation could help contribute to the elimination of a particularly frustrating feature. But it would be hard to ever trace an upgrade to the user feedback Microsoft gathers.
