The release date is set to be July 11, this Friday. That's the same day as the launch of the new 3G iPhone. Palm's popular Centro smartphone is also now available in an unlocked variant for U.S. customers. For $299, you can buy this version of the Centro for use with any GSM carrier (e.g. AT&T and T-Mobile), no contract required. Simply pop your SIM card into the smartphone and your ready to go. The Centro from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon sells for only $99.99. But that low price can only be had if you sign on the dotted line for a two-year commitment. The unlocked edition comes is white with grey accents. Late last month, Google Maps for mobile with My Location became available for Centro. This development gave users faster access to local maps and driving directions, by approximating their current location on the map. This is supposed to save time and keystrokes for people trying to find where they are, what's around them, and how to get there. Google Maps for mobile with My Location is a free upgrade and can be had at www.google.com/gmm. For more on Centro, see the articles listed below. Related Links:
