By James Alan Miller
Sling Media yesterday announced it is releasing the first edition of SlingPlayer Mobile - its placeshifting software for smartphones - for the Symbian OS/UIQ platform. UIQ handsets that will support SlingPlayer Mobile at launch include Sony Ericsson P1i, P990i, W960i, W950i, M600i, G700, and G900, in addition to theMotorola Z8 and Z10.
With SlingPlayer Mobile installed on a smartphone, those with a Slingbox device attached to their television can view 'placeshifted' cable, satellite, or digital video recorder (DVR) content remotely anywhere in the world through a wireless broadband - 3G cellular or Wi-Fi - Internet connection on their smartphone. In the case of a DVR, for example, users can not only watch recorded shows, but pause and rewind live TV or queue new recordings from their smartphone as well. Sling Media recommends users have an all-you-can-eat data plan for their smartphone. That's important to keep costs down for streaming content over a 3G cellular-wireless connection. Versions of the client available exist for SymbianOS/S60-run smartphones, mostly Nokia models, in additon to the Palm OS and Windows Mobile. A BlackBErry client is reportedly in the works as well. In addition to the above software, Sling Media also rolled out a beta, version 2.0, of the latest edition of its Windows PC software client. It is supposed to include a number of new features and enhancements. See here to learn more. Related Links:
