App called Rotary Dial allows you to dial phone calls old-school style, as if you were using a rotary phone and not one of the most advanced smartphones ever made.

When touchtone phones started to replace rotary dialers I thought it was the coolest thing when I was a little kid. Thirty-odd years later and the opposite rings (pun intended) true. You can now download an application called Rotary Dial to the iPhone.

The software offers exactly what the title promises: it allows you to make phone calls old-school style, as if you were dialing from a rotary phone.

All you have to do is stick your fingers into the virtual holes of the virtual rotary dial phone pictured on the iPhone's touch screen to experience what it was like to make phone calls way back when the cell phone industry was a nothing more than a gleam in the eye of a few executives, scientists and engineers.

The developer's got the sound effects down exactly as I remember them. The whole dialing experience looks and sounds exactly as it did on real rotary dial phone. You get everything but the tactile sensation.

Rotary Dial isn't a particularly practical app, but it’ fun nonetheless. Anyone of a certain age or older will surely get a kick out of it.

The title is available for download through the iPhone App Store for $0.99.
