Are Smartphones Bad for Marriage?

By Amy Mayer
September 19, 2008

As if the risk of BlackBerry thumb and eye strain aren't enough, now some psychiatrists and psychologists are cautioning that addiction to your handheld could threaten your marriage.

Remember all the yelling in the Archie Bunker sitcom, largely predicated on the notion that husband was ignoring wife? Well whether it's you or your spouse doing the ignoring, these days it's as likely to be a smartphone causing the distraction, as it is a newspaper or TV.

What to do?

Put down your PDA some weekend. Just let it go. If you can't handle the separation (or the intensity of actual conversation with your partner), you may need professional help.

Think you've got your tech connections under control? Unplug for a weekend. Go ahead.
