Tip: Smartphone - Free Topographical Maps

Now, those stealing away to not-so-remote areas for a little R&R, who are unable to cut the umbilical cord to their smartphones, can get useful information about the terrain delivered to their handhelds. Fugawi Touratel offers free topographical mapping software that uses your phone's cellular-Internet connection, not internal GPS, to bring up relief maps.

Of course, that means it only works where you're within range of tower. The software works on certain Blackberry, Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung and Sanyo phones. If you're going truly remote, use the software in advance to view, or even print, the topo maps.
