Report: Consumers Unaware of What Their Phones Can Do

As new smartphones with multimedia features become available, not as many users will use these capabilities as you might think.

According to a report by Port Washington, N.Y.-based research firm The NPD Group, 45 percent of U.S. mobile phone users prefer mobile phones just for making calls rather than the available multimedia features.

NPD reports that 34 percent of mobile phone users were unaware that their current phone's memory could be expanded, 28 percent of mobile phone users were unaware that they could watch videos, and 12 percent did not know if they could use the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Although many users do not know they have these capabilities, 71 percent of handsets consumers purchased in the United States are capable of playing video, NPD says. In addition, 60 percent of phones purchased did have expandable memory, and 55 percent featured GPS technology.
