Count Calories Through Texting

By Amy Mayer
January 21, 2009

Some who've lost weight merely by becoming uber-conscientious about how much they eat swear by calorie counting. Add it all up and you'll be-what is it, shamed? into eating less. Or something. Regardless of the underlying strategy, the act of counting calories gets easier and easier.

Now, it's another opportunity to whip out your phone.

Calorie Count Mobile from About.com offers a text messaging approach or a web-based one for tabulating calories on the go. (BlackBerry users, skip these details and simply text "BB" to 432584. You'll get quick access to the BlackBerry Application.)

For texters, send 432584 a SMS that is "food" followed by the item you want information for, such as "food hamburger." You'll get back the basic nutritional data.

Or, from your mobile, type http://ccm.about.com into a browser. Search for the food in question, select from a variety of options (such as commercially processed, made from a recipe, etc.) and the nutritional information will appear.

There's nothing terribly mobile-specific about the site, but the ability to pull it up on your subway ride from the dinner restaurant to the after party might help you decide how decadent of a dessert to order at the next stop.
