Reports are surfacing that an application called MemoryUp destroys memory on the Android G1 phone.

The application apparently erases contacts and installs adware, according to users in the Android Community forum. Customers also blame MemoryUp for spamming their e-mail accounts.

Critics seek a stricter approval process for apps in the Android Market similar to that of Apple's App Store.

Does the hacking of the Android via the Android Market lessen the appeal of open source as some suggest?

Customers with Android phones can currently download free apps from the Android Market directly to their smartphones. Sometime early this year, however, developers will be able to charge for apps.

When that happens, the business model will be similar to that offered by Apple with its App Store for the iPhone.
