In its very visible ad campaign, Verizon Wireless boasts that it has the "most reliable network" to provide connectivity to BlackBerry Storms, LG Voyagers and other smartphones and cell phones. As Verizon states on its Web site, the test man seen in its ads "isn’t just a commercial character."

To underline that assertion, Verizon says its testers drove 1 million miles to test mobile phone service for quality connectivity. On the road, engineers test Verizon's wireless voice network by producing "phonically diverse conversations" on their PCs built for the task.

In all, the carriers testers made over 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon’s and other national carriers' networks.

This past year, the carrier invested $6.5 million to make enhancements such as additional coverage areas and cell sites.
