Canalys reports that during the second quarter of 2009 Apple accounted for 23 percent of the U.S. and 13.7 percent of the global smartphone markets. That's an impressive jump of 11.6 percent internationally and 16 percent nationally from the same period last year. Meanwhile, competitor RIM's U.S. share dropped slightly from 56.4 percent to 52 percent in the U.S. The BlackBerry marker experienced a gain worldwide, however, increasing from 16.7 percent of smartphones sold to 20.9 percent. Nokia with the Symbian/S60 platform, the international smartphone leader for years, maintained a considerable lead, dropping slightly from 58.2 percent to 50.3 percent. As for Windows Mobile, Microsoft saw its smartphone platform's share dip from 14.3 percent in 2008 to 9 percent during the second quarter of 2009.
