Verizon's much ballyhooed Droid challenge to the iPhone isn't an individual smartphone after all. Turns out it is a family of Google Android-run handsets, the first pair of which, it is
rumored, will ship early next month, on November 6th.
These models, called the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris, are very different from each other. The former is a high-end smartphone that is a horizontal-slider with a built-in QWERTY thumb keyboard, while the latter is said to be a tablet-style mid-level phone without a keyboard.
The Droid will run on Google's Android 2.0 platform and features a large 3.7-inch, capacitive touchscreen that runs at a hi-res 854 x 480 pixels (WVGA+) with haptic (vibration) feedback. There's been no word on what version of Android will power the Droid Eris, which sports a smaller 3.2-inch and lower-res 480 x 320 (HVGA) touch display.
Both Droids share Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, a 5 megapixel camera, and support for Verizon EV-DO Rev. A. 3G network as features.
Reportedly, a third Droid model, code-named Calgary from Motorola, is in the works. It is supposed to be a horizontal-slider-with-hidden-keyboard model like the Droid, but with a smaller display that runs at a lower resolution.
