Adobe Planning Flash Juggernaut for Smartphones in 2010

Adobe plans to release beta of Flash Player 10.1 for the webOS and Windows Mobile platforms by the close of 2009, followed by betas for Symbian and Google Android phones early next year.

The company made the announcement at its Max conference in Los Angeles. It is also well known that a version for RIM BlackBerry is in the works as well.

So it looks like nearly all major smartphones will support Flash sometime next year; the notable exception being the iPhone, of course. It is said that Adobe's long had a version of Flash ready for Apple's smartphone platform, but -- so far -- Cupertino's not biting.

The inability to play Flash Animation and video is a major hole for mobile platforms today. In the case of the iPhone, which promises to deliver the real-Web to users, the lack of Flash support is a glaring omission.

98 percent of PCs support Flash and the technology is used to deliver 75 percent of Internet video and 70 percent of Web-based games.
