Handango, one the largest providers of mobile software, handed out its annual Handango Champion Awards last month. The idea of the awards is to recognize the most outstanding mobile apps and developers across the Blackberry, Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile platforms.

Notice a glaring omission? Yep, Handango could not include iPhone/iPod touch software in the mix, as Apple is the sole proprietor of applications—with its over 100,000k-strong App Store—for its mobile devices.

For the first time in the history of the Champion Awards, consumers were invited to participate in the selection process choosing favorite apps across different platforms and a multitude of categories including Developer of the Year, Best Business App, Best Social/Messaging App and 2009 Groundbreaker. In the past, Handango turned to the media and industry insiders to make the selections.

SPB Software led the Champion Awards this year, winning a grand total of six awards for apps developed on both the Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms. Another standout included EA Mobile, which dominated the best casual gaming category with SimCity and Bejeweled.
