The International Imaging Industry Association (I3A) sent out this warning yesterday: Be sure keep lithium batteries out of checked bags to avoid confiscation. That's because air travelers will encounter strict enforcement of regulations, in effect since January 1, 2008, on flying with lithium batteries this holiday season. Both primary lithium digital camera batteries and the lithium-ion types that power laptop computers, cell phones and smartphone, plus some AA batteries are prohibited in U.S. checked baggage due to their extreme flammability. Keep in mind, however, lithium batteries are safe inside their devices in carry-on bags and spare batteries are also safe in carry-ons if activation is prevented.
