BlackBerry: ZoomSafer Eliminates Texting When Driving

By James Alan Miller

ZoomSafer's launched program to offer consumers free BlackBerries equipped to run its safe driving software. It has teamed up with cell phone retailer Wirefly to furnish ZoomSafer-supported RIM smartphones for free with select service plans to qualifying customers of every major U.S. wireless provider.

ZoomSafer locks your BlackBerry’s keypad when you begin driving to prevent outbound texting and e-mailing. Inbound alerts are suppressed temporarily to eliminate the temptation to look at your phone, and a reply is automatically dispatched on your behalf letting the sender know you’re driving and you’ll get back to them when you reach your destination. ZoomSafer also allows you to make and receive hands-free phone calls.

“We’ve created flexible software for smartphones that automatically knows when you’re driving and actively encourages you to use your phone in a safe, responsible, and hands-free manner,” according to ZoomSafer co-founder Matt Howard. “Thanks to our partnership with Wirefly, the internet’s leading authorized retailer of cell phones and plans, we’re offering, at no upfront cost, BlackBerry smartphones so that current or new wireless subscribers can use ZoomSafer to answer the distracted driving problem.”

In addition to consumers, ZoomSafer is promoting itself as a way for companies to enforce distracted driving policies as well. Check out the video below to see ZoomSafer in action.
