nVidia Teams Tegra Chips With Android

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, nVidia announced an iteration of Tegra chips with support for the Google Android OS.

In addition to Google, nVidia is collaborating with the Open Handset Alliance on Android. In a statement, nVidia's general manager said the company will work with the Alliance on mobile graphics for Android phones to make handhelds more "intuitive" and "instinctive."

According to nVidia, smartphone manufacturers will be able to incorporate Android-based Tegra chips into handsets to allow for Web and Internet tools such as mobile mashups and location-based apps.

nVidia will ship the new chips to phone makers by mid-2009.
