Rumor has it Palm will soon release an update to the platform, the webOS, that runs its new Pre smartphone.

The webOS is the follow up to the much loved but long over the hill Palm OS.

Reportedly due within the next month, webOS 1.1, is said to include a number of enhancements, especially in terms of security and enterprise support. There’s supposed to be better handling of digital certificates and several Exchange Active Sync improvements. That latter includes IT-initiated remote wipe; required PIN with complexity; device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts; auto-lock; and improved digital certificates.

The platform upgrade may also include more apps from third parties—and maybe even Palm itself—in the App Catalog.

In related news, someone has apparently unlocked the Pre for voice and SMS (not data) on Verizon's network. Check out the video here at PreCentral.
