Palm's just made the software development kit (SDK) for the webOS, its follow up to the Palm OS, available to all interested developers. Previously, only members of an early access program could use the SDK to create software for the platform. The general release of Mojo, the name of the SDK, will allow a far greater number of developers to create much-needed apps for the platform.

Sprint released Palm’s latest smartphone, the Pre, a few weeks ago. It is the first device to run on the webOS. While there's much to like about the Pre, including the ease-of-use of its on device software store, the App Catalog, the relatively sparse number of apps filling said market has been a bit of disappointment.

This should start to change this fall when Palm lets all developers submit their wares to the App Catalog.

According to Palm, Pre users have downloaded 1.8 million apps since the smartphone was release six weeks ago. It added that thousands of developers participated in the Mojo SDK early access program and new apps are already in the pipeline for the App Catalog.

See here for more information about the the Mojo SDK and, if you are developer, here for how to sign up to get it.
